Stress, anxiety, and depression are the three leading mental problems in the world. Mindfulness has been a subject of scientific study since John Kabat-Zin introduced the MBSR in 1979 at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Mindfulness training has been shown to be effective in reducing stress, helping with stress related disorders such as anxiety and panic attacks, and with helping people to remain calm in different situations. Electrocardiography scans show that persons practicing mindfulness have activity in different areas of the cerebral cortex, suggesting that the practice of mindfulness helps you to develop the brain into one that is conscious, acting in the present, and less prone to stress.
Most people find that mindfulness has little to no effect at first when they begin learning it, and later, as they begin to integrate it into their everyday life, it has a very large impact that can literally change how they approach who they are and what they do. you can expect to achieve some of the following goals with mindfulness.
Enjoyment – By consciously focusing your attention on what you are doing, you will enjoy it more. Focus on the food you are eating, on the thing you are doing, on what you are listening to, watching, reading, etc. Simply focusing your mind on your task can create enjoyment. However, if you are accustomed to multi-tasking and overthinking while you work, you might first have to train your mind into reacting in this way.
Reduced Stress – By ceasing to worry about the past and the future and instead focusing on the present, you can reduce stress. Acting and focusing your attention on doing things and being instead of deciding what you have to do and what can go wrong can greatly reduce your stress. In fact, the act of performing activities without thinking about other things is actually calming in itself.
Relationships – By focusing on being in the present instead of thinking, you allow yourself to enjoy your time with other people and focus on them, in the present. This can greatly improve any type of relationship because you can focus your attention on them and their needs instead of on your own worries.
Productivity – Mindfulness is greatly beneficial to productivity, which is one of the reasons that companies ranging from Google to Target now offer mindfulness classes to their employees. Mindfulness allows you to focus your attention on what you are doing, which allows you to complete the work more quickly without shifting your attention between different things, and otherwise to improve how you use your time, physically and mentally. Focus does get things done.
Those four points can impact every other point of your life. By improving your enjoyment of things, you can make better use of your time off, enjoy your food more, enjoy activities and outings in ways that you wouldn’t while stressing about things, and otherwise get the most out of everything you do.
By reducing stress, you can increase your energy, get more sleep, increase your willpower, increase your motivation, improve your happiness, and stop self-propagating cycles that take away from your personality and your health.
Improving your relationships improves your ability to be happy with those relationships, helps to create better bonds, and will give you more things to be happy about.
